Thanksgiving weekend is a holiday that nearly everyone looks forward to each year. Many people enjoy this one even more than the Christmas holidays. This may be due to the fact that Christmas Eve is a day that many businesses remain open and operational so not everyone gets Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off. However, Thanksgiving usually comes in the form of a four day holiday as it hits on a Thursday. Many people get Thursday through Sunday off and that gives them time to go traveling. Also, it is important to remember that the day after Thanksgiving is considered to be the biggest holiday shopping day of the year.

Many plans can be made for Thanksgiving weekend that cannot be made for other holidays. Not only is there a great meal cooked, served and eaten, but there are popular sports events televised as well as holiday parades to either attend or watch on television. It is easier to travel for a visit to long distance relatives when you have four entire days to enjoy the festivities. Thanksgiving is also the time when people start getting excited about December arriving along with the Christmas holidays. This is the time when many people put up their Christmas decorations and start their shopping.

The Thanksgiving weekend is also a very special time for children, although they may love this holiday because they tend to love anything that gets them out of having to go to school. However, there are other parts of the holiday that children enjoy. They get to visit with some of their favorite relatives as well as play with their friends. Older children may also be allowed to help prepare some of the food that will be served during the meal. Younger children enjoy getting some extra days of cartoon programs as well some cartoons that have been created especially for Thanksgiving.

However you decide to spend the Thanksgiving weekend, make sure that it is meaningful to you, personally. Customs have been started in a lot of families over the years that are handed down as time passes. This can be something as simple as a special dish or a particular way a dish is prepared to how thanks is given before the meal. There are many ways to enjoy this very special time with your family and it should be used to bring everyone together to remember just what there is to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving videos are used by many families to record the special moments of their Thanksgiving holiday. These can be touching moments to funny ones to some that no one else was ever meant to see. Whatever is included, however, you can bet that they will be enjoyed over and over again throughout the years. Children especially, as they get older, enjoy watching these videos of Thanksgivings past so they can laugh at the older styles of clothing and hair dos. They cannot believe that what their parents or grandparents thought was so cool is now so hilarious.

Something that most people will always work into their Thanksgiving videos is the preparation of the meal itself. There is almost always something entertaining that happens in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day. If someone disagrees later with the sequence of events that took place surrounding a particular cooking drama, it will be right there on video for everyone to see and make their own assessment of what actually took place.

The Thanksgiving meal is definitely going to be on this special video. It may need to be set up so that the equipment is recording by itself so that everyone can be in this part of the Thanksgiving videos. You will want to catch the sweet moment where everyone tells what they are most grateful for during that year as well as when grace is said by the head of the family. When you watch this part later, you will most likely see children with their eyes open rather than closed, and possibly sneaking something from a nearby serving dish.

After the Thanksgiving meal is when some of the best moments are caught on video. This is when you catch Grandpa napping in the recliner snoring like a chainsaw. Some priceless moments are actually set up just for the Thanksgiving videos. When someone nods off after eating all of that turkey, they may wake up to find a mustache drawn over their upper lip or something similarly amusing to everyone else.

You cannot forget about the pets on Thanksgiving Day! Your holiday videos will most likely contain some of the funniest and cutest moments involving the family cats or dogs. They do the most unexpected things and you surely do not want to miss a moment of anything they may try. In fact, as you watch your videos years from now, it will probably be the pets that provide the most entertainment.

Thanksgiving travel is something that can be either very enjoyable and relaxing or a complete nightmare. A lot of it depends on the distance that is being traveled and the method of travel being utilized. Many people who have a destination that is a very long way from where they live tend to make the choice between traveling there for Thanksgiving or Christmas, but not both. The expense involved is another thing that must be taken into consideration when trying to make the decision of traveling or not for this particular holiday. Some people save up all year to make the trip.

Traveling by plane has become somewhat of a nightmare over the last eight years and people who engage in Thanksgiving travel by air find this out rather quickly. While it is definitely the fastest way to go, it can also be the most annoying and tiring way to travel. If you want an early flight out, keep in mind that you will need to be at the airport about two hours ahead of time. Therefore, if you have a flight, for example, that is scheduled to depart at 6:00 AM, you are going to need to arrive at the airport by around 4:00 AM to get yourself checked in and go through all of the security measures that are now in place.

Thanksgiving travel by car can be a real adventure especially when you are traveling with children. Parents may want to keep that in mind before planning a long road trip with very young children. You will also need to be sure that you will have enough time off from jobs or school to make it worth your while. Driving two thousand miles really makes no sense if you only have four days to get there and back. You may be able to get there in time for Thanksgiving dinner and a nap before you have to hit the road again. So consider your time frame.

Another method of transportation for Thanksgiving travel is the train. While not quite as fast as a plane, it is still faster and more comfortable than a car. Many people choose traveling by train when they want to spend time with their families who live a good distance away. However, even traveling by train, it is still better to plan for a few extra days if you want to spend some actual quality time with your family.

For the people who will not be planted in front of the television to watch a myriad of sports events on Thanksgiving Day, there are actually Thanksgiving movies to be enjoyed. There are apparently so many of these that lists of the top five to the top ten best movies that take place around Thanksgiving appear all over the Internet. While most of these lists include many of the same movies, you can find a couple of different ones here and there if you spend some time looking. Read the summaries provided and that should help you make up your mind which ones you want to see and which ones you want to avoid.

One of the most popular of the Thanksgiving Movies is 1973’s A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. While this movie was made for television and most likely targeted children, you can find DVDs of this movie to watch at home. Also as you watch this movie, you will understand that Charlie Brown and the gang are not necessarily just for kids. Adults find a lot of enjoyment from the hidden messages in this comic strip world brought to the screen.

The 1995 film, Home for the Holidays, has Holly Hunter playing the part of a single mother. She loses her job and finds out her daughter will not be coming home for Thanksgiving all on the same day. This is one of the more well known Thanksgiving movies that centers around a dysfunctional family and how they spend Thanksgiving Day.

The year 2000 offers the movie, What’s Cooking? The plot follows four very different families as they get ready for Thanksgiving Day dinner. It covers all of the usual holiday family stress with many great actors portraying the different family members. These include Kyra Sedgewick, Julianna Margulies, and Mercedes Ruehl.

In 2003, an indie holiday film called Pieces of April treated the public to a delightful holiday movie. Starring Katie Holmes as April, the black sheep of her dysfunctional family, this movie centers around her attempts to cook Thanksgiving dinner for her family. She is trying to do all of this in her New York apartment which is very tiny. One of the sweeter Thanksgiving movies, it has it all when it comes to holiday and family emotions.

Even if you cannot get someone to watch these movies with you on Thanksgiving, there is no reason that you cannot closet yourself and watch them anyway.

Thanksgiving holidays usually get a back seat to other holidays such as Christmas or New Year’s. However, to many people Thanksgiving is a very important holiday and is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest. There are many delicious dishes prepared for this meal. Sometimes the cooking and preparation will start days ahead of time, depending on just how many people will be attending the dinner. For large families, the women consider it a privilege to cook for their men as well as the rest of the relatives. There are also many recipes that are brought out JUST for this occasion.

Many times people have to make a choice between traveling for Thanksgiving holidays and Christmas holidays. As they really are so very close together, it can get expensive to travel a great distance for both of the holidays. For people who have to make this particular decision it is sometimes alternated. One year they will travel for Thanksgiving and the next year they will travel for Christmas holidays. Thanksgiving is not always the most crowded holiday when it comes to using planes as a method of transportation. However, Christmas holidays usually need to be planned well in advance because it seems that this is the holiday that EVERYONE wants to spend with their families.

Thanksgiving holidays are a favorite among a lot of people due to the four day weekend it typically produces. While a lot of businesses will open up on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, many will stay closed until Monday morning. This offers a lot more time to enjoy some visiting with family and friends. If you are brave enough, the day after Thanksgiving is considered to be the biggest Christmas shopping day of the year. In addition, you will also start to see Christmas decorations appearing through out the entire weekend.

It is not necessary to choose whether the Thanksgiving holidays are your favorite or not. You can still do a lot of things to enjoy that day even if you do not have any family or friends to spend it with. If you find yourself alone for Thanksgiving, make some plans that will involve you with other people. No one has to be alone during the holidays unless they choose to be. This means Thanksgiving, too. If you look around, you will find plenty of others who are on their own for the holidays. Maybe you can gather them for a nice dinner cooked by you.

Thanksgiving gifts are not as common as gifts given for other occasions such as Christmas or a birthday, but you may run into a situation from time to time where a gift at Thanksgiving may be appropriate. There are several reasons for this. For example, you may be invited to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving dinner and you will want to show your appreciation for being included. Maybe it is your own family who is hosting the dinner but you were unable to help in the preparation for some reason. You may want to say thank you with a gift.

These Thanksgiving gifts can be many things. A good bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers may be nice. You may bring a CD of music that you know is appropriate or that the hosts enjoy. Customized baskets are always wonderful ideas. Know your hosts and you can create a specialty basket of goodies just for them. For instance, if you know that the woman of the house did all of the work to get this Thanksgiving dinner on the table, you may want to give her a spa in a basket. She will appreciate the bubble bath later.

If you are having trouble trying to decide what Thanksgiving gifts are best for your situation, go with something fun. If your hosts have small children and rarely have a chance to go out for an evening together, give them a self printed booklet of “coupons” good for several occasions of baby sitting. New parents, especially, love those. Your gift may be something even simpler than that. Offer to do all of the cleaning up following the meal. There is always a lot of dish clearing and washing along with putting away leftovers. Some hostesses may really love you for doing this.

Most of the time just about any Thanksgiving gifts you choose will work and will be much appreciated. After all, it really is the thought that counts in most instances. Therefore, most of the hosts you may be buying for will smile just because you thought to bring them ANYTHING. It will not matter greatly what that gift is. However, since you would like to make sure that your gift means something more than just a thought, do a little research and find out if there is something that your hosts really want. If it is not too extravagant for you, present them with a gift you know they will truly love.

A Thanksgiving gift is typically something that is a personal choice of the sender as it has never been considered necessary to give a gift for this particular holiday. However, there are some people who just love to give presents and they will latch on to any excuse to do so. People who receive gifts at Thanksgiving are usually very surprised since they did not expect a gift for this time of year, and very pleased and happy to receive one. It is quite a caring and considerate gesture.

Some ideas that are appropriate to give as a Thanksgiving gift may be something like a special dessert or bottle of wine taken to a Thanksgiving dinner that you are invited to. Seasonal flowers can be presented to the host and hostess of the dinner. These are usually given by a guest who is not a part of the family, as family members will most likely have been participating in the shopping and preparation of the food and that would be considered their “gift.” If you choose to go the route of wine, you may want to let the shop manager help you select a good one that will fit everyone’s taste.

If you know of someone who is going to be alone at Thanksgiving, a very thoughtful Thanksgiving gift is that of a dinner invitation. This can be done in a variety of ways. You can invite this person to share Thanksgiving dinner with you and the rest of your family, or you can prepare a special meal just for this person and deliver it. However, if you know that this person is going to be eating it alone, it may be nicer to include him or her with your family. Should you choose to do this for someone who cannot get out, deliver it prepared to stay and visit awhile, and plan to at least have dessert.

Many people give of their time, money and talents as a Thanksgiving gift each year. These are the grandmothers, mothers, daughters, aunts and other family members who give of their time to do the shopping and preparation of the Thanksgiving dinner. This is done out of love for the people who will be enjoying this meal and it may be that this is the biggest gift of all. So if you are trying to think of the perfect gift to give at Thanksgiving, think in terms of yourself, and what you can do to add to this special day.

A Thanksgiving card is something that is not expected by most people. It is not like a Christmas card or a birthday card. This greeting card is more like an optional or selective one. While there are many different Thanksgiving greetings created each year, and many people DO buy them to send out to family and friends, it is still not a holiday that everyone assumes they will get a card for. In fact, it is more of a special and sweet surprise when one of these cards is received. It shows that the sender really does care about the receiver and is happy to use any excuse to say so.

Now, if you choose to not send a Thanksgiving card to someone, that does not mean that you have made some sort of social faux pas. It simply means that you may not be a big greeting card sender. Or it can mean that you just were so busy with the actual preparations of Thanksgiving that you did not have the time to do it. This does not mean that you have done anything wrong or rude because there is not a written rule that cards must, or should, be sent out at Thanksgiving.

If you choose to send out a Thanksgiving card to someone, though, there are many ways to do it. There are the Hallmark stores, or other specialty card shops that will carry these. You can choose the perfect card for everyone on your list. There are even machines now that allow you to create your very own unique cards for every occasion. These can be a lot of fun. For the very busy person who is on the go all the time, there are eGreetings. There are so many of these to choose from, it may take you longer to sift through them than just going to the card shop. But they are easy to send as they go right to the recipient’s email account.

Young children may have making a Thanksgiving card part of their lessons or craft time at school. These are the cards that parents truly treasure and keep forever. Those little hands that crafted these unique cards will grow into adult hands one day, but that sweet reminder of childhood will always remain with their parents. This may be the start of a tradition in families and there will be homemade Thanksgiving cards every year for parents and grandparents. It is sure to be something they will look forward each year.

There are many reasons to write and give a Thanksgiving Address. These are usually done for more formal settings that have been planned well in advance for different public or even private organizations. This can include churches, civil clubs, and even the military can host something that will require speeches along with the food. Country leaders may also have their speech writers to work up something for them to say to the citizens of their respective countries. It is a time when people need to hear words of encouragement so that they can regain a positive focus in their lives.

A Thanksgiving Address will have words of hope and encouragement. It will also contain thankfulness for the good things that have happened during the last year. This may not be specific in nature, but may be covering, instead, an entire country as a whole. While it may not have been the best year in your life, it may have been a pretty good year for your country in general. That is what you are meant to see and hear when you are listening to this special address from your country leader. Try not to dwell on all the negatives of the past year but instead stay focused on the good that was done.

When you are listening to a Thanksgiving Address, you may almost feel prayerful in your gratefulness. Many people with large families also will write an address to give for Thanksgiving. This serves as an opening to the dinner itself as well as a sort of grace to thank higher powers for the food that is to be served. It is a very elegant and classy way to begin the Thanksgiving meal and shows that this is a very important and meaningful day in the lives of those attending.

Sometimes families who decide to include a special Thanksgiving Address with their meal have parts in the address where everyone will recite something together. It can be a poem, a prayer, or simply something that is special to their family in particular. But it does get everyone in attendance involved in that one meaningful moment of the day. The family members may even join hands while the address is being delivered. Either way, it is a rather unique way to help celebrate the day instead of just making it about sports events on television and eating too much food.

When you think of a cowboys Thanksgiving it may bring to mind such phrases as “Home, Home on the Range” or the thoughts of late night campfires, sleeping under the stars, and riding horseback as they kept herds of cattle in line. This may or may not have happened a lot, but you can bet that even while on the cattle trail the cowboys always found a way to be thankful and have a special meal just for the Thanksgiving Day. It may not have been as elaborate as the spreads you have now, but they would have been as special as they could be.

An old time cowboys Thanksgiving most likely consisted of things such as meat that they hunted and cooked over the fire along with baked beans and some sort of corn bread. Just how it all worked out would depend on what sort of cook they had with them. If a cook was specifically hired to go along on the trail, chances are their Thanksgiving meal was much better than if they had to fix something themselves. There would most likely have been a horse drawn wagon taken along with cooking supplies and food to make it nicer.

Today, cowboys Thanksgiving is a lot different. On large ranches, there may be many cowboys employed along with ranch hands to keep the ranch running smoothly. These men live on the ranch and usually have dormitory style sleeping arrangements. When Thanksgiving comes around, the person in charge of cooking will be given special instructions to cook a traditional meal on that day. All of the cowboys and ranch hands will gather in their dining area to enjoy a delicious spread of customary Thanksgiving food.

Smaller ranches will usually invite the ranch hands in to eat Thanksgiving with the family as they are usually treated as part of household. While this is not exactly a cowboys Thanksgiving, it is a version of it. These ranch hands are just luckier than those cowboys of older times in that they are treated as part of the family and thus are invited to take part in the special holiday meals and celebrations that the family has. Of course, those cowboys from long ago were most likely quite pleased with their Thanksgiving meal, it is because they did not know it could be even nicer. Rarely are current cowboys left out of a decent Thanksgiving meal these days.
